107 - A Treacherous Denial
Luke 22:54-62 captures the profound emotional and physical suffering of Jesus immediately following his arrest, juxtaposed against the heartbreaking personal failure of his chief disciple, Peter. Swept away to the house of the high priest, Jesus remains in custody while Peter follows at a cautious distance and settles by a courtyard fire. Over the course of the night, Peter is confronted three separate times by bystanders—including a servant girl who recognizes him—and each time he vehemently denies any association with Jesus out of fear for his own safety. Luke presents a striking contrast: Peter, who had confidently promised that he would never abandon Jesus, collapses under pressure, while Jesus remains steadfast and faithful as He moves toward the cross.
